Keyword Research

Definition

Keyword research is the process of finding and evaluating the search terms real people use, then deciding which ones a site should target. It weighs search volume, competition, and — most importantly — the intent behind a query to match each keyword to the right kind of page.

In Plain Term

Keyword research is asking what words your customers actually type, instead of guessing what you’d call your own product. Businesses say “IT training institute”; students search “computer course near me” — keyword research is what catches that gap before you’ve written the page.

How It Works

  • Starts with seed terms, then expands using tools (Ahrefs, Google Keyword Planner) and real sources: search suggestions, People Also Ask, competitor pages, and questions students actually ask
  • Each candidate is judged on volume, difficulty/competition, and business value — high volume with zero buying intent is often worth less than a low-volume, high-intent term
  • Intent decides the page type: informational terms belong on blog posts, commercial terms on course or service pages
  • Terms get grouped into clusters, so one strong page targets a family of related queries rather than one thin page per keyword
  • Long-tail terms (“digital marketing course fee in Kathmandu”) are usually where a smaller site can realistically win

Examples

  • Finding that “digital marketing course fee” has lower volume but far higher intent than “digital marketing”
  • Discovering a set of student questions that justify a new blog post rather than a course-page section
  • Mapping 20 related queries to a single course page instead of writing 20 near-duplicate pages

Commonly Confused With

  • Keyword research vs SEO — keyword research is the planning step that tells SEO what to work on; SEO is the whole practice, including the technical and off-page work keyword research says nothing about
  • Keyword research vs keyword stuffing — research decides which terms a page should target; stuffing means repeating those terms unnaturally in the text, which search engines penalise
  • Keyword vs hashtag — a keyword is what someone types into a search engine; a hashtag is a discovery label on a social post
