Definition
Social media marketing is the use of platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn to build an audience and promote a business — through unpaid organic posting and community interaction, paid advertising, or both. Its defining trait is reaching people who weren’t searching for anything in particular.
In Plain Terms
Search marketing waits for people to ask a question. Social media marketing goes to where people already are, mid-scroll, and has to earn the pause. That’s why creative quality matters far more here than keywords do.
How It Works
- Two halves that behave very differently: organic (posting, replying, community building — free but distribution is limited by the algorithm) and paid (Meta Ads and equivalents — instant reach, priced per click or impression)
- Platform choice follows the audience: Instagram and TikTok for younger consumers, LinkedIn for professional and B2B, Facebook for the broadest local reach in Nepal
- Content is judged by engagement, which in turn decides how far the algorithm distributes it — a feedback loop that rewards posts people react to
- Organic reach on most platforms has declined for years, which is why most serious social strategies now include paid budget
Examples
- An Instagram Reels series showing student projects, driving profile visits to a course link
- A Facebook page answering enrollment questions in comments, building trust before anyone visits the site
- The same course creative run organically and as a paid Meta Ads campaign, with the paid version reaching 20× the audience
Commonly Confused With
- Social media marketing vs Meta Ads — Meta Ads is one paid platform inside social media marketing; the discipline also covers organic posting and every other network
- Social media marketing vs SEO — social reaches people by audience profile and interest; SEO reaches people by what they searched for. Social links also generally don’t build search authority the way backlinks do
- Social media marketing vs influencer marketing — influencer marketing pays someone else’s audience for access; social media marketing builds and uses your own channels
