How NEB GPA is calculated

Each part of each subject earns a grade point out of 4.0 from the percentage scored. Those points are then averaged with credit hours as the weight.

In Class 11 and Class 12, compulsory subjects carry 4 credit hours and optional subjects carry 5, so one optional subject moves your GPA roughly 25% more than one compulsory subject. Theory and practical carry credit separately too. A 5-credit subject marked 75:25 is 3.75 credit hours of theory and 1.25 of practical, which is why a strong practical lifts a weak theory grade — but only by a quarter of that subject's weight. Computer Science splits 50:50, so practical work counts for far more there.

Most calculators online take a flat average of subject grades and ignore credit hours, which is why two of them can give different answers from the same marks. This one uses the credit-weighted method, and every credit hour stays editable so you can match your own grade sheet exactly.

The formula
GPA = Σ (grade point × credit hours)
       ÷ Σ (credit hours)

Theory and practical are separate components, each carrying its own share of the subject's credit hours.

What is different about SEE

SEE uses the same grading scale but a different subject structure. Nepali, English, Mathematics and Science and Technology carry 5 credit hours each; Social Studies and both optional subjects carry 4. Every subject is marked out of 100, split 75 theory and 25 practical or internal assessment.

One rule catches students out: theory is what decides a pass. If the theory component falls below 35%, the subject is graded NG however well the practical went, and it has to be re-sat.

Common questions about NEB and SEE grading, credit hours, and turning your GPA into a percentage. If your question is not here, our counsellors are happy to help.

How is GPA calculated in Nepal?

Each subject component earns a grade point out of 4.0 from the percentage scored, and those points are averaged with credit hours as the weight: GPA = Σ (grade point × credit hours) ÷ Σ (credit hours). A 5-credit optional subject counts about 25% more than a 4-credit compulsory subject, and within each subject the theory and practical parts carry their own share of the credit.

Is 3.6 GPA an A or a B+?

In SEE and NEB results, 3.6 is the bottom of the A band, which covers 80–89%. B+ runs from 3.2 up to just under 3.6. These bands apply to individual subject grades — an overall GPA of 3.6 means your weighted average landed at the A boundary, not that you scored A in every subject.

What is 70% in GPA?

70% is the bottom of the B+ band and gives a grade point of 3.2. The grade point does not move inside a band, so 70% and 79% both give 3.2 in that subject.

How do I convert my GPA into a percentage?

Multiply by 25. A 3.2 GPA is roughly 80% and a 2.8 is roughly 70%. There is no official NEB formula, so this is an approximation that most colleges and employers in Nepal accept. Where the form allows it, give the GPA itself and attach the grade sheet — a converted percentage often reads lower than the grade actually represents.

What happens if I get NG in one subject?

NG means below 35% and counts as 0.0 in the weighted average, so a single NG in a 5-credit subject pulls an otherwise strong GPA down sharply. You re-sit that subject's exam and the rest of your grades stand. In SEE and NEB it is the theory component that decides this — passing the practical does not rescue a theory score below 35%.

Is this calculator accurate for Class 11 as well as Class 12?

Yes. Class 11 uses the same grading scale and the same credit-hour rules, with Social Studies and Life Skills as an extra compulsory subject. Switch to the Class 11 tab and the subject list changes with it.

My subject is not in the dropdown. What do I do?

Choose "Other subject" from the list and set the credit hours from your own grade sheet. Everything in the table is editable, so an unusual subject combination still calculates correctly.

What should I study after my result?

If you are heading toward IT, what matters more than the GPA is what you can demonstrate — a portfolio, a project, a certification. AITC Education trains students after SEE and after +2 in web development, digital marketing, data science, cyber security, graphic design and accounting software, with placement support.
