SERP (Search Engine Results Page)

Definition

A Search Engine Results Page (SERP) is the page a search engine returns after a query. Beyond the classic list of blue links, a modern SERP mixes paid ads, AI-generated summaries, featured snippets, map packs, video carousels, and People Also Ask boxes, and its layout varies by query.

In Plain Terms

The SERP is the shelf you’re competing for, and it’s not one shelf — it’s rebuilt for every search. Ranking “number one” means little if ads, an AI summary, and a map pack sit above you; knowing what the SERP for your keyword actually looks like matters more than the rank number.

How It Works

  • Composition is query-dependent: an informational search gets snippets and People Also Ask; a local search gets a map pack; a commercial search gets ads at the top
  • Paid results (Google Ads) and organic results occupy the same page but are won in completely different ways
  • SERP features push organic listings down the page, so click-through rate at a given rank varies enormously by query type
  • Checking the live SERP before writing is how you find out what format Google is actually rewarding for a keyword

Examples

  • Searching “digital marketing course in Nepal” returning ads, a map pack, then organic course pages
  • A “what is CPC” query where a featured snippet answers above every organic result
  • Comparing the SERP for two target keywords and choosing the one where organic results still sit above the fold

Commonly Confused With

  • SERP vs SEO — the SERP is the page you’re competing on; SEO is the work you do to place well on it
  • SERP vs rank/position — rank is your single slot on the page; the SERP is the whole page, including everything sitting above your slot
